Is Homeownership Right For You?

What prompted you to think about buying a home? Is it time to settle down, perhaps starting a family, or the need to put down roots? Are you ready for the responsibility and benefits of owning a home? Whatever the reason may be, buying a home should not be decided in a day but thoroughly looked at for the pros and cons of homeownership. Making a list of pros and cons will help you decide if buying a home is for you.

Homeownership is probably the largest financial commitment you will make. Owning a home will also have altering effects on your lifestyle. You would now have the responsibility of maintenance of the home (inside and outside), upkeep of a yard and unexpected expenses for repairs that may need immediate attention. Redo your annual budget to see if you can afford added expenses without having to cut back on things you don't want to give up.

Consider your present employment situation. Do you plan on being with this employer for a long time and have an opportunity for advancement or salary increases? Is there any chance that you would be asked to transfer to another location with the company? If you work long hours you should consider purchasing a home near your place of employment to cut down on traveling time, leaving more time for yourself.

If you have children you should check out the academic quality of the local schools.

Verify if transportation will be available to and from school including late buses for after school sports or activities. The school's reputation may not be an issue for you now, however it may matter if and when you sell it at a later date.

If after considering the above you don't feel 100% confident about buying a home, don't. You should take all the time you need to decide until it feels right. Buying a home is definitely a major investment that will alter your present lifestyle.
