Know Thy Neighborhood
Return To Learning Center IndexA home in the right neighborhood should be one of your top priorities. Choose a location that will fit your lifestyle.
You will want to look in an area where homes are well-cared for and public facilities are available. Drive around the neighborhood during both the day and evening hours to see what activities are happening. To protect the value of your investment avoid industrial & retail areas, heavy traffic, vacant buildings. If there is an empty lot next or near the home find out what it is zoned for. You may want to be sure the area will remain a residential atmosphere. Check for crime and vandalism statistics.
Your age is another factor in deciding where you want to live. Seniors may want a quiet, peaceful area with senior facilities within walking distance and public transportation. Young families are looking for a family oriented neighborhood, the best schools and parks for outdoor activities for the children.
Searching the internet is a good way to find out about a community. Local community newspapers generally provide information on what's happening in the area concerning crime, school updates/issues and community events. The local planning department can provide development projects. The Chamber of Commerce provides the retail and commercial issues in the area.
Don't take lightly the importance of location when you find the home you want to buy. The right location will enhance your lifestyle and provide years of happiness for you and your family.
